DAY 1A
Despite the heavy rains the night prior, the Metro Card Club was packed to the brim with players all wanting to get a piece of that 2 million guaranteed prize pool of the Metro Independence Day Tournament. The Metro Card Club Independence Day Tournament, which guarantees Php 2,000,000 for a buy-in of Php3,000, started off today with a field of 232 runners for Day1a. Notable names that played today were professional poker players Eric Sia, Don Carmona, Mark Rivera, Melvin “The Miracle” Matibag, Wally Sombero, Martin Gonzales, Event #30 WPT Southern Poker Championship Russell Blattberg, and our very own APT Champion Neil “Dirty Ice Cream” Arce.
Of those mentioned, only Eric Sia and Don Carmona would move to Day 2. The chip leader for Day1a is Raymond Dee who cemented his chip lead when he caught a set of 5s on the river against Ashby Rivera’s pocket Jacks. He bagged 343,100 chips. He is followed by Vince Nachor Jr. who has 203,000 chips. Day1B of the Metro Independence Day Tournament started off with 185 players and after 12 levels of play only 44 were left to move to Day 2. The chip leader for Day1B is the voice of the forums Del “Welcoat” Ty with 202,900 chips. This does not exceed Day1A chip leader Raymond Dee but it does put Del Ty at overall 3rd chip leader for Day 1 so far. Prominent names that played on this day were professional poker players Mark Pagsuyuin, Brian Sombero, Jojo Tech, Martin Corpuz, Rusty Cardona, Dirty Ice Cream ’10 champion Mark Amparo, and FPT champions Tonypet Albano, Joshua Rivera and Kent del Rosario. A rush to play in the last Day1 of the Metro Independence Day tournament happened yesterday at the Metro Card Club. Day1c was packed with 291 players all vying to win a piece of the 2 million guaranteed prize pool, making the total field for the whole Day 1 708 runners. Notables that entered the tournament were Professional poker players Amor Nario, Ed Marcelo and Jade Triste, Pokermanila’s Nikki Filart, Asia Poker Academy’s Ron Regis, Metro champions Oliver Roxas and Mike Takayama, Metro Card Club Bacolod’s Joey Agustin and Metro Card Club Cebu’s Richard Sharpe. Of these notables, Filart, Tristenario and Sharpe were able to move forward to Day2. Although Stephen Gaw led Day1c players into Day 2 with 215,500, Raymond Dee has kept the chip lead for the whole Day1 with 343,100. 172 players still remain in the tournament. Notables that started Day 2 include professional poker players Eric Sia, Jojo Tech, Ed Marcelo, Jade Triste, Amor Nario, Don Carmona, Rusty Cardona, Pokermanila’s Nikki Filart, Metro Card Club Cebu Richard Sharpe, Metro Card Club Marketing Manager Nina Castro and Filipino Poker Tour champion Josua Rivera. Unfortunately, none of them made it to the Final Day.
Of the 172 players, 70 were in the money. Our bubble boy was Ace Custodio whose pocket Queens were beaten by Raymond Dee’s K-J when Dee caught a King on the turn.
The day played until 26 players were left standing, all assured a minimum payout of Php12,000. Leading the Final Day is Gamel Esteban with 1,279,000 chips, followed by Edilberto Gopez with 924,000.

Day 3 started off with 27 players all assured Php12,000 but none were satisfied until they got the whopping first place prize. And after 5 days of tournament play and a harrowing 9 hours of the final table a new champion had been crowned at the Metro Card Club.

Julian Lagman won himself a nice Php650,000. Jerick Medina, who gave a very good fight, placed 2nd bringing home Php330,000.
